With the support of the Embassy of the Russian Federation and the Embassy of Nicaragua
On February 4, the Russian House in Brussels hosted a Russian–Nicaraguan literary and musical evening dedicated to the works of the outstanding poets of Nicaragua and Russia, Rubén Darío and Nikolay Gumilyov.
The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, the Belgian public, as well as Russian and Nicaraguan compatriots residing in Belgium.
In his welcoming remarks, the Russian Ambassador to Belgium, D.V. Gonchar, emphasized that Russia and Nicaragua are strategic partners united by a long history of friendship and cooperation in many areas, including culture. Speaking about the contemporary poets R. Darío and N. Gumilyov, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of their creative legacy for world culture and named love for the homeland as the key unifying theme in their works.
For his part, the Ambassador of Nicaragua to Belgium, S. Castañeda Lacayo, expressed gratitude to the Russian House in Brussels for the cooperation and described the joint organization of the evening as a concrete manifestation of brotherhood and mutual respect between the Russian and Nicaraguan peoples. Speaking about the work of R. Darío, the head of the Nicaraguan diplomatic mission drew attention to the political — anti-imperialist and anti-interventionist — message of his works, which remains particularly relevant today, when the authorities of some Western countries attempt to pursue policies of diktat, pressure, sanctions, interference in internal affairs, and sometimes even direct aggression against sovereign states.
During the event, poems by R. Darío and N. Gumilyov were performed by professional actors and admirers of their work. The musical program featured a performance by a Nicaraguan artistic ensemble, presenting vibrant musical pieces that added a South American flavor to the evening.
A highlight of the evening was a literary performance by the Permanent Representative of Venezuela to the European Union, J. Valero Briceño, who recited poems of his own authorship from different years.
