Anton Chekhov (1860–1904) was an outstanding Russian writer, playwright, and physician. He was born in the city of Taganrog into a merchant family. After receiving a medical education at Moscow University, he simultaneously began his literary career, publishing short stories and satirical sketches in magazines. Even in his early works, his talent for subtle psychological analysis became evident.
Chekhov created numerous short stories and novellas, combining irony, deep humanism, and mastery of concise, precise storytelling. His plays, such as The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard, have become classics of world theater.
Chekhov suffered from tuberculosis throughout his life, which ultimately led to his premature death in 1904. His works have had a profound influence on world literature and theater and remain relevant to this day.
