Red Army officer Nikolai Kiselev receives an order to lead more than two hundred Jews — elderly people, women, and children — out of the Nazi-occupied territories of Belarus and across the front line. These people, exhausted by hunger, having lost their loved ones and nearly driven mad by the horrors they witnessed, must walk hundreds of kilometers through forest trails in order to regain hope for salvation and faith in the future.
