But Viktor Tirskiy, a meteorologist on one of the islands of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, says: “If you fall in love with the Arctic, it’s for life.” Today, work here is in full swing year-round. A modern town is being built, a new airfield is under construction, a reservoir park for fuel storage is being set up. A major cleanup is also underway — the Arctic is being cleared of waste left behind during its intensive development in Soviet times.
