Slavik is 7 years old. Every 2–3 days, his family kaslaet, meaning they migrate across the tundra. “As long as we migrate, we live,” they say. But soon, things will quiet down at the camp — the younger children will go to school. Helicopters bring them to a village school. Slavik’s father completed nine grades. His mother attended university, but followed her husband back into the tundra. Now they want a different life for their children — education and good jobs. Even if that means their kids may never return to the tundra. The elders and adult Nenets believe they are the last generation to live as traditional reindeer herders.
