On April 15, 2026, during Easter Week, the Russian House in Brussels invites you to the next event in the Hermitage Evenings series. We will continue exploring the Hermitage exhibitions in the General Staff Building on Palace Square and visit a unique space — the Church of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky.
Language: Russian/French
In 1827, after the completion of the building that housed two ministries on Palace Square, Emperor Nicholas I decided to establish a house church dedicated to the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Empire.
The exhibition features fourteen works of Russian ecclesiastical art from the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, created in the first quarter of the 19th century — during the reign of Alexander I. Some of these works are connected with the events of the Patriotic War of 1812. The central place in the display is occupied by objects belonging to the travelling church of Alexander I, which accompanied the emperor during the Patriotic War of 1812 and the foreign campaign of 1813–1814.
The exhibition in the Church of Alexander Nevsky opened in 2021, marking the 800th anniversary of Alexander Nevsky — a legendary military leader, a talented diplomat, and a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The video tour will be led by Anna Petrovna Ivannikova, research fellow at the Department of the History of Russian Culture. After the tour, she will answer questions from the audience.
