The Year of Science in Russia

This is the legendary research vessel Vityaz moored at the quay of the Museum of the World Ocean.

Built in Germany for cargo transportation and originally named Mars, the Vityaz is of interesting and eventful history with the most notable events in the period from 1949 to 1979.

During the three decades, the vessel made 65 research expeditions, covered about 800,000 miles and completed 7,942 stations flying the flag of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. From its board the maximum depth in the Mariana Trench (11,022 m) was measured, new species of animals and plants were described as well as numerous discoveries were made. The Vityaz was a leader in the World Ocean exploration and an ambassador of peace and friendship: scientists from 50 research institutes and 20 countries worldwide worked here.

Vityaz, a Ship of Science exhibition is about studies and discoveries made on board the legendary vessel. This year it is celebration 4 jubilees:

85 years since construction (1939)

75 years since the first expedition (1949)

45 years since the last expedition (1979)

30 years of moorage at the museum quay (1994)
