Young Belarusian Pavel Smolich lives with his mother in Western Belarus. After the peaceful Riga Treaty, the entire Western part of Belarus came under Polish control. His older brother Anton is a partisan, fighting against the Polish occupiers. In contrast to him, Pasha takes a neutral position. The death of a loved one makes him contemplate simple human values: family, homeland, which are now divided by the border. A meeting with the Soviet intelligence officer Lesya Rubtsova dramatically changes his life.
