To the 205th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica

Museum of the World Ocean

On February 18, the Museum of the World Ocean will present the lecture “In Search of Antarctica: 200 Years Later” on the virtual platform of the Russian House in Brussels. The event is dedicated to the 205th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica.

The participants of this expedition—Fabian Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev—made one of the greatest geographical discoveries in history: they found the sixth continent, Antarctica, as well as 29 previously unknown islands.

The only artist who took part in the expedition was painter and draftsman Pavel Nikolaevich Mikhailov. With documentary precision, he captured the entire history of the voyage, including visits to South America, Australia, and the Pacific islands.

Two centuries later, the sailing ships Sedov, Kruzenshtern, and Pallada embarked on the “Sails of the World – 2020” round-the-world expedition, organized in honor of the 200th anniversary of Antarctica’s discovery and the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory. Two employees of the Museum of the World Ocean—artist Yevgeny Mashkovsky and senior researcher Pavel Matviyets—took part in this expedition, conducting research on board the Sedov.

The history of Antarctica’s discovery will be presented by Pavel Matviyets, a participant in the “Sails of the World – 2020” expedition. The lecture will feature drawings by Pavel Mikhailov, depicting the key stages of the expedition, images of the discovered and explored Antarctic islands, and vivid moments from the 1819–1821 journey. Additionally, the speaker will share his memories and impressions from the Sedov’s round-the-world voyage.
