80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War

Starting from April 26, the Russian House in Brussels presents an exhibition of works by the legendary Soviet photographer Yevgeny Khaldei, who documented World War II as a correspondent.

Vernissage 26.04 18:00

”Look at the faces of these people. They are the ones who defended our country, they are the ones who liberated Europe, defeated fascist Germany… They are all with me, dead and alive – all those who won the victory,” wrote TASS photo correspondent Yevgeny Khaldei in his memoirs. His works are a large- scale chronicle of the Great Patriotic War, serving as documentary evidence of the heroic deeds of the people who fought against fascism.

Khaldei was the only Soviet military photo correspondent to cover the war from the first to the last day. He moved with the Red Army units from Murmansk to Berlin, taking part in the liberation of Sevastopol, the storming of Novorossiysk, Kerch, the liberation of Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Austria, Hungary.

To mark the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, the TASS Agency presents an exhibition of war images by Yevgeny Khaldei. They tell the story of how our country defended itself and how Soviet soldiers liberated Europe. The first somber days of war, the self-sacrifice of the soldiers on the front, the joy of people in the liberated towns: each photograph by Yevgeny Khaldei reveals the human story behind it, and bears witness to the gratitude of those who stood up to defend their homeland and their peaceful lives.

His photographs were used in history textbooks. The photograph ”Victory Banner over the Reichstag” became a symbol of the great victory, and at the Nuremberg Trials Yevgeny Khaldei’s work became evidence of nazi crimes. Decades later, these photographs remind us of the incredible resilience and courage of the people who defeated fascism.
