About GITIS

GITIS is one of the largest theater schools in Russia and Europe, founded in 1878. The Institute preserves the traditions of the Russian theater school and is the only higher education institution in the country where students receive education in all specialties necessary for the theater. In 2028, GITIS will celebrate its 150th anniversary.

The institute includes eight faculties — acting, directing, musical theater, variety arts, choreography, production, scenography, and theater studies — as well as 19 departments. Workshops at GITIS are led by the chief directors of leading Moscow theaters, the best masters, and teachers known in the professional community. GITIS graduates successfully work and hold high positions not only in theaters in Russia and the CIS countries but also abroad. Among them are classics of Russian theater: V. Meyerhold, V. Nemirovich-Danchenko, as well as our contemporaries — A. Efros, A. Vasilyev, I. Raikhelgauz, S. Zhenovach, D. Krymov, A. Abdulov. This list could go on indefinitely.

Building on its vast historical heritage, GITIS seeks new modern forms of student training — both within the institute and by developing international cooperation with famous foreign theater schools. GITIS partners have included theater schools in the UK, France, China, Korea, Japan, Spain, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Italy, the USA, and Canada. Additionally, GITIS has strong ties with theater schools in the CIS countries. A special place is held by cooperation with China — the Beijing Central Academy of Drama and the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

The institute organizes and finances tours of students’ graduation performances, holds exhibitions of scenography students’ work in foreign theater schools, and arranges productions by creative teams of GITIS graduates abroad. One of the priority areas is the exchange of choreographers. Every year, GITIS hosts student theater festivals: “Your Chance | GITIS fest”, “Silver Sword”, “GITIS — Master Class”, and the R. V. Zakharova International Competition for Young Choreographers “Maria”. GITIS students also participate in international student festivals abroad.
