On September 8, 2025, the Russian House in Brussels commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Borodino, one of the key events of the Patriotic War of 1812, known in European historiography as the “Battle for Moscow.” The Russian army under the command of M.I. Kutuzov repelled Napoleon’s forces, demonstrating the strength of national spirit and readiness to defend the homeland.

Special attention is given to the historical role of the future first King of Belgium, Leopold I, who in his youth served in the Russian army and participated in military actions against the French. Fluent in Russian, he advanced with Russian troops to Paris, completing the 1812–1814 campaign. This experience became an important foundation for mutual respect between our nations and highlighted the international significance of the events of the Patriotic War.

On September 8, 2025, D.V. Gonchar, Ambassador of Russia to Belgium, together with the Director of the Russian House V.G. Bunina and the Embassy team, laid flowers at the busts of Russian Emperor Alexander I and Belgian King Leopold I in Astrid Park in Brussels.

“These sculptures, placed opposite each other, remind us not only of the brotherhood in arms but also of the personal friendship between two great rulers. Their cooperation became a solid foundation for centuries-long relations between our countries,” said the Russian Ambassador.

The Russian House in Brussels emphasizes that the memory of the Battle of Borodino is not only a tribute to Russian heroism but also a testament to the deep historical ties between Russia and Europe. The events of the past serve as a guide for mutual understanding and respect in the present and future.
