The Year of Science in Russia This is the legendary research vessel Vityaz moored at the quay of the Museum of the World Ocean. Built in Germany for cargo transportation and originally named Mars, the Vityaz is of interesting and eventful history with the most notable events in the period from 1949 to 1979. During the three decades, the vessel made 65 research expeditions, covered about 800,000 miles and completed 7,942 stations flying the flag of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
