Brussels, May 8, 2025 — On Victory Day, representatives of the Russian House in Brussels laid flowers at Ixelles Cemetery, where Soviet soldiers who died in Belgium during the First and Second World Wars are buried. The annual ceremony symbolizes gratitude and remembrance for those who gave their lives in the fight for freedom and peace in Europe. A special guest at the ceremony was Liliane Maroutaeff, daughter of Yury Maroutaev, a member of the Belgian Resistance. A flower laying ceremony was held at the Ixelles Memorial Cemetery in Brussels on May 8, 2024. There are graves of Russian participants of the resistance movement of Belgium. Among them is the grave of "Belgian Joan of Arc" Marina Alexandrovna Shafrova-Marutayeva.On December 8, 1941 in the center of Brussels еhere was an assassination attempt on a high-ranking Nazi officer Major Kruge,  the assailant escaped. The Germans, infuriated by such audacity, took hostages and demanded that the killer surrender. Upon learning of this, Marina confessed to her husband and decided to surrender, but on the way she wounded another German officer. [...]

At the Russian House in Brussels, an evening was held in memory of Marina Shafrova-Marutaeva, a Russian noblewoman who became a heroine of the Belgian Resistance during World War II. She went down in history as the "Belgian Joan of Arc" for her bravery and selfless fight against the Nazis. In 1941, she attacked a German officer, for which she was arrested, but she managed to escape. Later, she actively assisted the Resistance, participating in sabotage operations and rescuing prisoners of war.
