800th anniversary
of Alexander Nevsky
Alexander Yaroslavich, nicknamed Nevsky for one of his military victories, is a Russian national hero of whom the whole country is proud.
This Novgorod prince, who lived in the thirteenth century, was a successful politician, great warrior, strategist and tactician who never once lost a battle. He earned the title of Christian ruler, protector of the Orthodox faith, and the freedom of the people. He was recognised as a saint and canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church.
