Why learn Russian?
- The Russian language ranks 6th in the world in terms of the number of speakers (after English, Chinese, Hindi, Spanish and Arabic); in terms of prevalence – 8th place (after Chinese, Spanish, English, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali and Portuguese).
- In terms of use on the Internet, Russian is in second place. It is one of the most translated languages in the world. Among the languages into which most books are translated, Russian is in 7th place. Among the languages from which they are most often translated, Russian is in 4th place.
- Russian is the official or working language in a number of international organizations: the UN and some of its subsidiaries, SCO, OSCE, CIS, EurAsEC, CSTO, etc. Now Russian is spoken by 146 million citizens of the Russian Federation and another 127 million abroad. What you can learn in this course…
The purpose of the course is to develop and improve the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and broaden your vocabulary with publications and analysis of the prominent Russian media.
This course is tailored for students who speak Russian at the level B1 and above.
Within this course we refer to multiple topics:

Social problems: parents and children relationship, marriage in the modern world, communication in social networks.

Processes in economy: new technologies and challenges, new professions, unemployment, housing problems.

Modern Russian culture: arts, theater, music, cinema and literature.
Part of the course is devoted to well-being, sports and physical culture in Russia.
The unique nature of this course is in the variety of educational materials that capture the most relevant and live stratum of the modern Russian language – the language of media. Here lies an opportunity to get acquainted with live Russian speech, since many media sources retain the features of spontaneous conversation; broaden and master your vocabulary in different styles, thus it is important for proficiency in Russian language.
We use “sound” news, podcasts and printed content from various media sources for the class and home work. These media provide a lot of video content and illustrations, which helps us keep classes interesting and exciting.
We focus on specific language of Russian social media as well, since they are used in daily communication.
This course we recommend as preparation for the tests of Russian as foreign language: TRKI-2 (B2) and TRKI-3 (C1). At the end of the course students will write a final essay on one of the topics that we’ve discussed in the classes.
